Description
Mentha reverchonii is a rare and refined mint species native to the limestone hills of southwestern France, including parts of Provence and Corsica. Often confused with the more widely known Mentha requienii (Corsican mint), reverchonii is a distinct species, offering a gentler aroma, larger, thyme-like leaves, and a less densely spreading growth habit.
This mint forms a low, cushiony mound of finely textured green foliage, releasing a soft, classic mint fragrance with subtle herbal-earthy undertones when brushed or warmed by the sun. Unlike the strongly peppermint-scented requienii, Mentha reverchonii offers a more subtle sensory experience, making it ideal for naturalistic herb gardens, sensory planting, or use in Mediterranean borders.
While not commonly used in cooking, its leaves can be infused into delicate herbal teas or used as a mild aromatic garnish. Best grown in well-drained soil with full sun to partial shade, it is less vigorous and slightly more tender than other mints, so container growing or winter protection may be beneficial in cooler climates.
A botanical gem for the collector or gardener seeking something unusual, regionally rooted, and quietly elegant—Mentha reverchonii brings a whisper of southern France to your garden.
