Description

Also known as pennyrile, mosquito plant, Cunningham Mint or pudding grass, Mentha pulegium is a strongly aromatic member of the mint family, native to Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East. When crushed, its leaves release an intense spearmint-like scent that has made it a historic favourite in herbal traditions and cottage gardens. Pennyroyal has long been used as a folk remedy and culinary herb and is also noted for its insect-repelling qualities, hence the name “mosquito plant.”

A low-growing, creeping perennial, it thrives in damp soils and sunny spots, making it a distinctive addition to sensory gardens and educational plantings. Its delicate lilac flowers attract pollinators, while its scent invites exploration and conversation about the cultural uses of plants.

This plant is often sold as a typical mint, but in fact should be thought of as a marginal, it doesnt like drying out at all, and seems to find it difficult to survive winter unless submerged. The folklore around this plant is unsurprisingly rich!

Finally, it was a fair while later after researching all the folklore around this plant, when the penny dropped, so to speak, regarding Nirvana’s album ‘In Utero’s track listing and the song ‘Pennyroyal tea’. And so it really should be noted…

⚠️ Warning: Toxicity
Mentha pulegium contains compounds that are toxic to the liver and can be fatal if ingested in large quantities. It has historically been used as an emmenagogue and abortifacient, but such uses are medically unsafe and strongly discouraged. This plant is not for internal use and should be handled responsibly, especially around children and pets.
