Sold to me under the name Mentha spicata, this striking variety shows clear traits more typical of Mentha longifolia or even Mentha Himalayensis, with its elongated, slightly woolly leaves, silvery-green hue, and bold, herbal aroma. Whether a regional strain or a case of mistaken identity, this mint offers a refreshing, earthy-mint flavour with subtle complexity, making it ideal for robust teas, savoury dishes, and traditional herbal uses. Thriving in full sun and well-drained soils, it grows vigorously with a slightly wild, upright habit and produces early lavender flower spikes that attract pollinators. Its uncertain lineage only adds to its intrigue—offering gardeners a resilient, aromatic mint that bridges continents and traditions. A perfect addition for those who love mints with a story.

Polynesian mint is not a widely standardised botanical term, but it is often used to refer to regional mint varieties or mint-like plants found in Pacific Island cultures, particularly those used in traditional medicine and cooking. In most cases, it refers to local cultivars of Mentha species introduced from elsewhere, as Mentha is not native to Polynesia.

That said, a few points of clarification:

• Some plants referred to as “Polynesian mint” in herbal commerce or gardening may be cultivated forms of Mentha arvensis (field mint) or Mentha × piperita (peppermint), adapted to tropical climates.

• In Hawaii, a native plant called ʻAlaʻala wai nui (Stachys agraria) is sometimes called “Hawaiian mint,” but it is not a true mint (Mentha)—it’s in the same Lamiaceae family but belongs to a different genus.
